Things to Do Near Our Snowbird Vacation Rental in North Central Florida
High Springs sprang up around the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad maintenance facility due to its many steam locomotives. Once upon a time, about 12 tracks crossed Main Street, near a roundhouse, maintenance shed and storage buildings. Most of the town’s older homes were built because of the railroad to house its employees. The steam trains are a thing of the past, but High Springs has been reborn as a center for outdoor activities and antiques shopping.
Snowbirds seeking vacation rentals in North Central Florida will find many options in the area. We invite you to visit Rum Island Retreat, a cozy, private woodland cabin rental near the Santa Fe River.
Although paddling the Santa Fe River is an excellent tour, there’s a lot more to view and do here. You are able to shop historic downtown High Springs, hike O’Leno Park, tube the Ichetucknee, or relax at Ginnie or Poe Springs. The area’s crystal-clear springs also makes us a world-famous spot for snorkelers and scuba divers.
High Springs is lucky to posses an outstanding restaurant, the truly amazing Outdoors Cafe, serving both lunch and dinner. To start your day, you could join the locals at Alice’s Cafe. You have a Hardees, Subway and a few smaller restaurants in the vicinity, along with several fast-food and even more traditional restaurants in the nearby city of Alachua. We even have our own microbrewery in which you can try Naked Ed’s Pale Ale, made famous by our local “wild man.”
